1:00pm: Shake It Til You Make It (60 minutes)

Explore a dance style with a different intention — one where movement and costuming highlight the music and honor the legacy of yesterday’s shake dancer legends.

Never heard the term “shake dancer”? You’re not alone, and that’s exactly why we’re here. We’ll dive into some hip-shaking history too! These electrifying entertainers paralleled burlesque dancers, bringing “torso-twisting,” “hip-tossing” heat to African-American jazz clubs, burlesque revues, and jook joints. Think of them as the OG gogo dancers: the powerhouses who started it all!

In this exhilarating workshop, we’ll focus on movement textures, rhythmic accents, and exciting isolations.

Add flair with a shimmy or fringe belt or a coin scarf to emphasize your moves, and remember your water bottle!

Inspired by choreography techniques learned from Ray Gunn of Chicago’s Stage Door Johnnies, Lola LeSoleil will help expand your movement vocabulary. Perhaps you’re not sure how to connect your movements or wondering what to do after that shimmy? We'll get you from stuck to stupendous!

Be prepared to take written notes to reference in class and bring comfortable clothing for movement.
